About globalFEST’s Flagship Festival
gF's flagship festival takes place every January and is North America's most important world music industry event. Last year's festival sold out in advance and attracted over 1,500 music industry professionals, members of the press and fans! gF’s flagship festival is a springboard for launching touring careers in North America. gF alumni have gone on to tour North America at venues such as Hollywood Bowl, Lincoln Center, Bonnaroo, Coachella, The Kennedy Center, the Apollo Theater and hundreds of other theaters and festivals. Tours and cultural exchanges that result from gF's showcases have helped to build an ever widening audience for global music and by extension, an increase in international cooperation and collaboration. View the complete list of past gF artists here.
Over the last decade, globalFEST has become one of the most dynamic global music platforms in North America, growing from an acclaimed festival/showcase into a catalytic non-profit service organization for curators, artists, and the performing arts field. Through its work, gF encourages networking and cultural diplomacy; deepens cultural understanding among its constituents; builds audiences for international music and creates new opportunities for artists leading to a more robust and sustainable ecosystem for world music in the United States. Artists that participate in gF programs represent diverse musical styles from all corners of the globe, ranging from traditional to contemporary, and everything in between. Programs include: the gF Touring Fund, which provides direct support to artists to develop new markets and audiences; gF On the Road, tours that brings creatively programmed lineups to venues nationwide; and guest curating for both commercial and performing arts settings, including such influential events as SXSW, Bonnaroo, Lincoln Center and beyond, that serve to raise the profile and visibility of the artists gF works with, and world music overall.
Eligible artists must be tour-ready and have the infrastructure to make the most out of their appearance at gF. Unsure about how we define global music? We welcome music from genres spanning traditional and folk to electronic, Afropop to Afrobeat, psychedelic cumbia to American gospel. The best way to understand if your band is a good fit, is to check out our past artists, NPR archive and gF Artist Spotify Playlist to get a better idea of the diversity of each year's showcase. If you’re still not sure, email Stephanie at Stephanie(at)globalfest.org. We encourage artists whose music highlights issues related to social justice or amplifies the voices of marginalized communities to apply.
